Mass. Fugitive Surrenders In Puerto Rico

A man from the Dominican Republic who is wanted on assault and drug charges in Massachusetts has surrendered to authorities in Puerto Rico, officials said Tuesday.

Yael Sanchez Correa faces charges that include mayhem and armed assault with intent to murder for an "extremely violent attack" on his ex-girlfriend in June 2011 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Sanchez, 27, is accused of stabbing the woman and slashing her face in an ambush attack, then stabbing the woman's sister when she tried to intervene, Wark said.

"We're relieved that Correa is finally in custody and we hope this development brings his victims some sense of safety more than a year after their lives were turned upside down," he said in an e-mail. "We hope and expect to bring Correa back to Massachusetts to face these very serious charges and, ultimately, to hold him accountable for his actions."

Sanchez turned himself in Friday and was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service, said Ivan Ortiz, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. He has not yet entered a plea to the charges and it wasn't known if he had hired an attorney.

Sanchez, who also faces a drug trafficking charge, faces possible extradition back to Massachusetts as well as deportation back to his native country, Ortiz said.
