Fitchburg Art Museum Appoints DeCordova's Deputy As New Director

The Fitchburg Art Museum is getting a new director and the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln is losing one.

Nick Capasso has been working at the deCordova for 22 years, most recently as the museum's deputy director. He has curated scores of shows and has overseen the contemporary art collection and the outdoor sculpture park.

The suburban institution Capasso is familiar with is very different than the one he's moving to in Fitchburg.

"I’ve been working in this bucolic sculpture park for years and I’m eager to work in an environment that has a little more grit to it and a completely different feel," Capasso said. "The Fitchburg museum is knitted right into the fabric of Fitchburg."

Another big difference is that Capasso will be working with an encyclopedic museum with a historical collection as opposed to the deCordova's contemporary art and large-scale sculptures.

Capasso will replace Peter Timms who has served as the Fitchburg Art Museum's director since 1973 and retires in December.
