MBTA Ridership Was Up 2.3 Percent Last Year

The MBTA reported Thursday that ridership across the transit agency increased more than 2 percent last year, despite the implementation of controversial fare hikes and some service cuts.

Almost 400 million riders took trips on MBTA services in 2012, according to the T, an increase of 2.3 percent over 2011's figures.

In its release, the MBTA said "when the fare increase was being proposed, analysts had projected a ridership decrease of as much as 5.5 percent."

An average 23 percent increase in fares and some service reductions went into effect July 1, 2012.
