Bulger's Girlfriend Fights Sentence For Aiding

A lawyer for the longtime girlfriend of gangster James "Whitey" Bulger has argued that her eight-year prison sentence for helping Bulger while he was a fugitive was too harsh.

The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday in Catherine Greig's appeal. Greig pleaded guilty to conspiracy to harbor a fugitive and other charges after she and Bulger were captured in California in 2011. The couple was on the run together for 16 years.

Greig's lawyer said the judge "effectively tripled" the appropriate sentence for Greig. He said Greig should have been sentenced to about 2.5 years.

A prosecutor said Greig was sentenced appropriately because she did an array of things to help Bulger, including getting his medications.

Bulger faces trial in June, charged with participating in 19 murders.
