The defense began its cross-examination Monday of the man who may be the most important witness in the murder and racketeering trial of James "Whitey" Bulger.

Defense lawyer Hank Brennan had only a few minutes at the end of the day to question Bulger's former associate Stephen Flemmi, and in that time he focused on the murder of Flemmi's stepdaughter, Deborah Hussey.

Jurors heard some revealing details that had not come up when Flemmi discussed the same murder with prosecutors earlier in the day — including the sexual relationship Flemmi had with Hussey that he characterized as "consensual" and "a moment of weakness."

WBUR's David Boeri joined All Things Considered to discuss Monday's testimony.
