7-Alarm Fire Damages Multiple Homes In Somerville

Multiple apartment buildings were damaged by a seven-alarm blaze that ripped through a residential block in Somerville Thursday morning. Officials believe all residents have been accounted for.

The blaze on Calvin Street near Inman Square, reported just after 6 a.m., left two firefighters injured. The Red Cross says about 40 people have been displaced.

Officials say two of the damaged buildings in the neighborhood of closely packed three-story, wood-frame home will have to be torn down.

Somerville Fire Chief Kevin Kelleher said by the first time crews arrived on the scene, four structures were already on fire. As many as two others structures were also damaged. About 150 firefighters from more than a dozen departments battled the blaze.

Investigators are still looking for a cause and Kelleher would not say whether the fire was suspicious or possibly linked to other recent fires in the area.
