After a public vote between six finalists, the MBTA on Monday announced the winner of its system map redesign competition.

The winning entry was created by Mikheil Kvrivishvili, a designer from Moscow.

In its announcement, the T said Kvrivishvili's "map includes many new features that will provide customers with more information and a more appealing aesthetic including:

- all surface Green Line stations shown
- all SL2 stops shown
- area of the map showing the connections between Silver Line and the downtown subway stations enlarged to make it easier for customers to understand how the various Silver Line routes operate
- all rapid transit lines have a label with their color (i.e. the word “RED” appears on the Red Line)
- most of the rapid transit lines have been reoriented creating a more organized look
- line width of the Key Bus Routes and the font size of the Key Bus Route stations has been shrunk, resulting in a cleaner map where rapid transit lines stand out.

The MBTA said the new maps will be used as replacements and as new stations open, beginning with the Orient Heights Blue Line station when it reopens early next year.

In April, the T began accepting map redesign entries. After a panel of experts winnowed the entries to six finalists, the public voted on the options from Sept. 9-20. The MBTA said 17,045 total votes were cast over those two weeks.

This program aired on October 7, 2013. The audio for this program is not available.
