MBTA Ridership Hits Record High

Ridership on the MBTA jumped nearly 3 percent in October when compared to the year-ago month to a record high of more than 36.3 million passenger trips.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced Monday that average weekday ridership also set a record with more than 1.32 million passenger trips, a more than 4 percent jump over October 2012. It was the highest weekday ridership recorded since 1964.

The Red, Orange and Blue subway/trolley lines carried an average of 35,500 more riders a day than the previous October. Buses provided a daily average of 22,100 more passenger trips than October 2012.

Commuter rail ridership was down slightly.

MBTA General Manager Beverly Scott said "investing in public transportation is a critically important part of growing the economy."
