Forecast: After Snow, Bitter Cold Continues

This forecast was updated at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Depending on exactly where you live snowfall amounts vary wildly from our first nor'easter of 2014. In the central and western part of the state, this was more of a typical moderate snowstorm, while in Boston this was more of a major snowstorm spread over two days. The 10.6” which fell Thursday set a new record of snowfall in Boston for Jan. 2 and when added to the snow from today [Friday] added up to a total of 15.1 inches officially at Logan Airport.

The bitter cold will lead the headlines from the snow for the rest of the weekend. After a very cold afternoon overnight lows will be falling below zero across much of the region. The cold may do some damage to some flowering trees and shrubs, but we won't know the extent of any problems for a few months.

Wind chill advisories are posted for the areas in light blue on the graphic here as frostbite conditions remain in the forecast through early Saturday. A slow warming trend takes place Saturday afternoon with above freezing weather by Sunday. Our next storm Sunday night and Monday will be in the form of rain, although there can be some snow or sleet at the start of the storm.

A cold arctic wind returns for Tuesday and Wednesday before it becomes more seasonable at the end of the week.
