Mass. Panel OKs New Conflict Of Interest Rule

The state Ethics Commission has signed off on a rules change that would allow public officials to maintain some contracts they have with state agencies.

The measure approved by the commission on Thursday came after state Sen. Daniel Wolf, a Harwich Democrat, was forced to end his campaign for governor and nearly had to quit the Legislature.

Wolf is a co-founder of Cape Air, a regional airline which has contracts with Logan International Airport. The commission told Wolf that his financial interest in those contracts violated state conflict-of-interest rules.

The new regulation would allow public officials to maintain contracts with government agencies that predate their election or appointment to office. Once in office, contracts could only be renewed under terms that were non-negotiable and not subject to competitive bidding.
