Massachusetts Lawmakers Look Ahead To Busy Week

Massachusetts House and Senate lawmakers are looking ahead to a busy week as the clock ticks down toward the end of their formal session.

The Senate is expected to debate major bills, including legislation already approved by the House that would allow for the expansion of charter schools in Boston and several other communities and require more struggling public schools to adopt turnaround plans.

The Senate is also expected to debate another bill approved by the House which would overhaul the state's gun laws. The bill would strengthen local police chiefs' discretion over issuing gun licenses but would also require them to give written reasons for denying gun licenses.

The House is expected to debate a bill addressing local housing authorities next week.

The end of the Legislature's formal session is July 31.
