Second Woman Dies From Crane Beach Lightning Strike

One week after being struck by lightning, a Concord woman died Saturday.

Marianne Mellnick, 69, died at Massachusetts General Hospital Saturday, the Ipswich Police Department said in a statement Monday.

Mellnick and Marguerite Tomany had both been walking on Crane Beach in Ipswich on Sept. 6 when they were both struck by lightning.

Tomany, 61, of North Grosvenor Dale, Connecticut, died last Monday.

Contrary to some earlier media reports, Mellnick and Tomany were not swimming when they were struck but were walking toward the street, Ipswich police said Monday.

"This is a terrible tragedy that has struck our community," Acting Police Chief Jonathan Hubbard said in the statement.
