Prep work for the Green Line extension into Somerville begins Monday morning.

Workers will begin removing contaminated soil and demolishing existing buildings at the Union Square site, which is set to open in 2017.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone says despite the destruction, the work symbolizes renewal.

"It symbolizes a moment where we've begun to overcome the poor policy decisions of the past," he said. "We are so excited about the future of Union Square because it will embody the principles and tenants of smart growth and transit-oriented development."

Curtatone says construction on the Green Line stop is set to begin next year.
