Pearl Harbor Honored At World War II Ship In Boston

The 73rd anniversary of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor has been honored in Boston at a historic ship named for a Naval officer awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day.

About 200 people attended on Sunday at the USS Cassin Young at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston National Historical Park.

The park service says three Boston-area survivors of the attack that brought the U.S. into World War II were among them.

The Cassin Young, a destroyer commissioned in 1943, saw action in the Pacific and was refurbished several times at Boston Navy Yard before its decommissioning in 1960. Young, commander of the repair ship USS Vestal, saved his ship after being blown overboard by an explosion on the nearby USS Arizona. He died in the Battle of Guadalcanal less than a year later.
