The 12-inch cannonball is believed to be from the Civil War era. It was detonated in a controlled blast on Carson Beach after members of the state's bomb squad buried it in the sand.
State police said on Twitter that the cannonball was likely inert and was being detonated out of an "abundance of caution."
This is the cannonball. There is what appears to be a small hike where a wick might have once been inserted. pic.twitter.com/Jxh1AlnX4e— Mass State Police (@MassStatePolice) March 26, 2015Per MSP bomb squad, some cannonballs are filled with powder. If so, still could be an explosive capability. pic.twitter.com/InGr2w99EF— Mass State Police (@MassStatePolice) March 26, 2015Bomb squad members are burying the cannonball deeply under sand berm to absorb detonation. pic.twitter.com/tdFcYFUyMS— Mass State Police (@MassStatePolice) March 26, 2015Black material from inside cannonball. Possibly old black powder, but uncertain at this point. pic.twitter.com/1TQg1ytITT— Mass State Police (@MassStatePolice) March 26, 2015Does not appear to have been solid cast cannonball. Debris suggests it was filled with some type of material. pic.twitter.com/NoCL32kjOl— Mass State Police (@MassStatePolice) March 26, 2015
