Forecast: Slick Travel For The Morning Commute

There’s anticipation and trepidation before the first winter storm of the season and now that it’s happened, we can move forward.

It was amazing how poor the roads were after just 1 inch of snow around the Boston area yesterday. The weight of the sleet, the rain and the highly variable temperatures all made for a slick day.

This morning isn’t as bad as yesterday, but we still have winter-driving in many locations. Overnight, light freezing drizzle fell and put a coating of ice on everything. You’ll need to leave extra time to clear off the car windshield if you’ve parked out in the open.

Today will be mainly a dry and cold day. There won’t be much melting in spite of the temperature being above freezing. Ice tends to chill the lower part of the atmosphere and without much sunshine, it’s going to appear rather wintry all day.

A quick shot of rain moves in overnight, but temperatures will be mild enough to keep this in the form of rain and not some wintry mix. As the rain departs, it’s actually going to turn quite mild for the final day of 2015.  Highs will reach well into the 40s and there will be melting.

New Year’s Eve looks rather tranquil and quite comfortable for the last of December and first of January days. Temperatures will be chilly in the 30s for First Night activities, but that’s not too tough to take. A colder air mass is on the way for later this weekend and early next week, but it appears it won’t stick around too long.
