Legal Group Offers Helpline For Addicts' Inpatient Treatment

The Massachusetts Bar Association has started a free legal assistance program to help Norfolk County residents who are seeking court-ordered treatment for a family member or friend struggling with addiction.

The program offers help through a state law known as "Section 35" that permits people to petition the courts to involuntarily commit substance abusers to an inpatient treatment program when their drug or alcohol use puts themselves or others at risk.

Norfolk County residents can contact the MBA's helpline to be put in touch with volunteer lawyers who will help them for free, including going to court.

The helpline is the first of its kind in Massachusetts.
