Massachusetts Rallies, Vigils To Mark 73rd Anniversary Of Hiroshima Attack

Massachusetts peace activists are kicking off a week of solemn remembrances marking the 73rd anniversary of the U.S. dropping atomic bombs on Japan.

Nearly two dozen events are planned starting Saturday to remember the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing of Hiroshima, and the attack on Nagasaki three days later.

Massachusetts Peace Action says some of its members, meanwhile, are in Japan for a global anti-nuclear conference.

The Actors Repertory Refuge Theater will present an original play in Cambridge on Sunday evening, evoking the suffering of those who perished in the attacks.

Peace groups in Walpole, Pittsfield, Easthampton, Arlington, Watertown, Andover, Cambridge, Waltham and other cities and towns plan to stage rallies and vigils calling for universal nuclear disarmament.

A Nagasaki Day remembrance in Boston on Aug. 9 will close out the week.
