Homeless Campers To Be Ordered Off Greenfield Town Common

More than 20 homeless people who have been camping for weeks in a town common in northern Massachusetts are being ordered off the property by local officials.

Greenfield officials say they will be issuing an order Friday for the people to leave the town common by Aug. 20. The local Board of Health approved the order Wednesday, citing health and safety concerns.

Police say there have been reports of urination and defecation on the common. The Recorder reports there also was an unconfirmed case of bed bugs reported by an ambulance service and a hypodermic needle was found in some trash.

Mayor William Martin has told officials he's working to find other housing arrangements for the people on the common, some of whom have been there since early last month.
