Vic Chesnutt On Mountain Stage

The career of songwriter Vic Chesnutt is a storied one, to say the least. Paralyzed at age 18, Chesnutt began playing his intricate, emotional songs around Athens, Ga. It was there that R.E.M. leader Michael Stipe discovered him. Stipe would go on to produce Chesnutt's first two recordings, and in 1996 a tribute record featuring acts like Madonna and the Smashing Pumpkins singing Chesnutt's songs furthered his indie-cult status.

A prolific writer and recording artist, Chesnutt recently cut an album with filmmaker Jem Cohen as producer (North Star Deserter) and one with indie-rockers Elf Power (Dark Developments). In his seventh appearance on Mountain Stage since 1990, Chesnutt reveals "Granny," an unrecorded song inspired by a dream.
