Branford Marsalis & Joey Calderazzo Duo: Newport Jazz Festival 2009

The combination of only piano and saxophone isn't often seen on jazz stages. It has the air of a recital about it; the pianist must do a lot of work, and not every saxophonist is resourceful enough to hold form with spare surroundings. But if anyone could do it, it'd be the brightly adept Joey Calderazzo and contemporary jazz figurehead Branford Marsalis.

In addition to being great players, the two have a long rapport. Calderazzo has held a place in Marsalis' quartet for over 10 years, and has found time to record a number of his own projects. The powerfully gifted Branford, meanwhile, probably needs little introduction to those who pay attention to jazz. The two have not recorded a duo album, but the keen observer would predict an artful, communicative set from Newport's Marsalis Music stage on Saturday.
