We'll continue with Afghanistan in a moment. First, the latest on the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas.

At least 12 people are dead and 31 wounded. Law enforcement has confirmed the identity of the shooter. He is Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist. And he was killed by police.

NPR's Dina Temple-Raston joins us now. And Dina, I understand police had arrested several other suspects. What do you know about that?

DINA TEMPLE-RASTON: Well, two of the other suspects that they had arrested had since been released. But apparently, they have also brought in another man, another suspect, unclear what his role was in this, that they're questioning now. I mean, the latest developments are that the lockdown at Fort Hood, which had been on all afternoon and into the evening, is now over. And this second suspect seems to be involved. But we're still not clear how that is.

SIEGEL: And what more do we know about the shooter, Major Hasan, who was killed?

TEMPLE-RASTON: Well, as you said, he was a psychiatrist and he served in Bethesda, Maryland, and was posted apparently to Fort Hood. And he was a specialist in dealing with combat stress. Apparently, he was going to be deployed to Iraq, and that's something he didn't want to happen. And he had hired a lawyer because he didn't want to be deployed and was hoping to stop that from happening though unclear whether that was the motivation for what happened this afternoon.

SIEGEL: Okay. Thank you, Dina.

TEMPLE-RASTON: You're welcome.

SIEGEL: NPR's Dina Temple-Raston. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright National Public Radio.
