NPRMel Gibson's 'Passion' Makes Debut

With actors speaking in subtitled Aramaic and Latin, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ was originally thought of as an art-house picture. But as the director traded accusations with Jewish leaders and pundits speculated on whether the film would fuel anti-Semitism, interest has grown to the point that it opened this week in some 2,800 theaters.
