Najaf's Holy Shiite Mosque and the 'Valley of Peace'
NPR's Alex Chadwick talks with Juan Cole, professor of history at the University of Michigan, about the significance of the Imam Ali Mosque in the Iraqi city of Najaf and the adjacent Valley of Peace cemetery. The cemetery is the final resting place for millions of Shiite Muslim faithful, and is now the site of a fierce battle among Iraqi insurgents, troops loyal to the interim Iraqi government and U.S. forces.
