Cricket supporters cite the game's status as America's favorite team sport through the Civil War as proof that it can rise on these shores. But, until recently, few could have guessed that the likliest site for that unlikely development would be Lauderhill, Florida, a city of about 60,000 dominated by chain restaurants and gas stations. Driving from one strip mall to another, motorists often pass through the Miami suburb without even realizing it. But Lauderhill mayor Richard Kaplan insists his city is about to assume a bold new identity. Lauderhill, he says, is about to become the Cricket capital of America. Robert Andrew Powell has this report.
