College football season is upon us, and Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports is back to help analyze the games, bowls and polls.

After a summer in which Penn State's former defensive coordinator was found guilty of 45 counts of sexual assault and the university was ordered to return championship trophies from six bowl games, football has returned to State College, Pennsylvania.

"There was no argument that they shouldn't (play)," Wetzel told Bill Littlefield. "Last year when the scandal broke, they refused to cancel a single game. The kids who are playing and on scholarship had nothing to do with (the scandal), so why punish them? Then you have the economic impact (of a canceled football season) on a town like State College, which is dramatic for local businesses."

USC is No. 1 in the first Associated Press poll of the season, pretty good for a team that couldn't participate in bowls the past two years. "They have Matt Barkley, who could've been a top-10 pick this year," Wetzel said. "His decision to return really put USC over the top.

As for who could challenge the Trojans, Wetzel said there'll be — surprise, surprise — an SEC team playing for the national title. The SEC has five teams in the top 10: Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Arkansas and South Carolina.

Wetzel, who co-authored a book titled Death to the BCS, is counting down the days until the four-team playoff begins in 2014. "We're stuck in this two-year vortex now where nobody is defending the system we have...it is still the business and corruption of college football that's holding the postseason hostage for another two years."

This segment aired on September 1, 2012.
