A Call For Super Bowl Haiku

This call for haiku

Breaks lovely silence, squawking:

"Hey! You! Write haiku!"

For the 20th year, we'll be presenting Super Bowl Haiku on our Super Bowl Weekend show. I think it was originally meant to be a joke. I'm sure nobody involved anticipated that we'd still be laughing 20 years later. We can only hope that somebody's laughing with us.

At some point we began inviting listeners to submit candidates, and over the years we've gotten some beauties. Should you wish to try your hand at haiku, remember that the form requires 17 syllables arranged in three lines, five in the first and third lines, seven in the middle line. Count the syllables in the example above on your fingers, if you like. That's the way I did it when I wrote this not-entirely immortal faux-gem:

Silly coach, screamin'.

The call stands. You change nothin'.

But your heart explodes.

Tired of my witless albeit irritating efforts, the Only A Game staff looks forward to seeing what you can compose.

Leave your haiku in the comment section below or send an email to oag@wbur.org.

This segment aired on January 25, 2014. The audio for this segment is not available.
