From Phish To Earthquakes: A Super Bowl XLVIII Retrospective

Super Bowl XLVIII is less than a week away. The Feb. 2 matchup features the teams who entered the NFL playoffs as the top seeds: the Denver Broncos vs. the Seattle Seahawks. Both franchises were the subject of some fun segments on Only A Game during the season, here's a look back at our favorites.

January 11, 2014: Phish, Russell Wilson Unite In Seattle

People believe so much in this team that they feel like it’s Super Bowl or bust.

“It comes down basically to that one word: Wilson,” Camarata explained.

The film’s producers also discuss Seahawks coach Pete Carroll’s future as a disc jockey.

“He’s a pretty big music fan,” Camarata said.

But even if the Seahawks ride Phish all the way to the Lombardi trophy, don’t expect the band to catch on with the New England Patriots coach Bill Bellichick next season.

“I think he’s more of a Bon Jovi fan,” Weaver said.

Dec. 21, 2013: Seahawks Set Sights On Super Bowl

Before NFL regular season came to an end we caught up with Jerry Brewer, a columnist for the Seattle Times.

Even then — with two weeks of regular season play remaining — Seattle fans had their sights on the Super Bowl.

“How hopeful are fans regarding the Seahawks?” Bill asked.

“Hopeful is a word,” Brewer said. “It’s almost like arrogant. People believe so much in this team that they feel like it’s Super Bowl or bust.”

Brewer — for the second year in a row — proved prophetic on Only A Game.

“I think they’re going to the Super Bowl,” he said. “No one is going to come to Seattle and knock them off.”

Dec. 7, 2013: Seattle Seahawks Play Is Earth Shattering

The Seahawks’ impact on the Seattle area is palpable. Literally. On Dec. 2, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network recorded a disturbance during the first quarter of the Seahawks' Monday night matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

“We saw it fairly clearly on one of our instruments,” said John Vidale, the network’s director.

Do Seahawks fans pose a danger to the state of Washington?

“I was a little bit nervous, especially two years ago when they were talking about making more and more noise with each game,” Vidale said. “You know, if people are organized they can really make a building sway when they move in unison.”

But the Seahwaks have played their final game of the season at CenturyLink Field, and while baseball season is right around the corner, Vidale says Mariners games pose less of a danger to Washington residents.

“I think they’d be smaller events unfortunately,” Vidale said.

Nov. 16, 2013: Can The Chiefs Stop Peyton Manning?

On Nov. 16 we asked a simple question: can the Kansas City Chiefs stop Peyton Manning?

“Their defense is very well designed to stop what Peyton Manning tries to do,” Sports on Earth’s Mike Tanier said. “They have an exceptional outside pass rush which means they can get a pass rush on Manning with like only four defenders or five defenders.”

When the teams met that weekend, the Chiefs failed to sack Peyton Manning a single time. Manning finished with 323 passing yards and a touchdown.

Peyton Manning’s historic season got off to a hot start. In Week 1, Manning tossed seven touchdown passes. He tacked on five more over the next two weeks.

Ahead of the Broncos’ Week 4 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, we asked Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post to explain the keys to Manning’s early success.

“Watching Peyton Manning is like watching a college kid playing Madden or some video game and just dominating the opposition,” he said. “It’s stupid and stupendous.”
