Resume
Cassandra Wilson has been lauded by many as one of the greatest female vocalists of our generation. Her name fits well in the lineage of strong black women singers like Bessie, Ella and Billie, but her sound and approach to her music is nothing close to what we're been used to hearing.

She blends her husky contralto not with big bands but with guitars and hand percussion. Her repertoire has successfully stayed clear of the show-tunes and songbooks classics. Instead, Cassandra Wilson feels more comfortable performing pop, folk and blues. She recorded her latest album "Belly of the Sun" in an old Mississippi train depot.

We take in the incomparable music and style of the great Cassandra Wilson.

Guests:

Cassandra Wilson, musician and singer. Her latest album is "Belly of the Sun."

This program aired on April 26, 2002.
