photoWho are America's heroes? George Washington, Daniel Boone, Michael Jordan?

Over the past 40 years the American hero has fallen on hard times. Our business leaders, clergy and politicians can't be trusted, the skeletons have been pulled out of historical heroes' closets and entertainers and athletes are the people today's youth look up to.

In the wake of September 11th firemen, airline passengers, survivors and victims have emerged as the new American heroes. Tonight we look at who today's heroes are, who they should be, and why we need heroes at all?

Guests:

Peter Gibbon, Research Associate at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and author of "A Call to Heroism: Renewing America's Vision of Greatness"

This program aired on August 6, 2002.
