Michael Lind is a fifth-generation Texan who wants you to know the Texas truth behind George W. Bush. And the truth, he says, is that Texas has two faces. One is the hill country face of the open hand, the small farmer, of liberal democracy, anti-slavery and pro-Union politics. The modern face of LBJ. The other is the face of the Spanish conquistador, the high-rolling aristocrat, the crony capitalist, of bellicose foreign policy abroad and religiousfundamentalism at home. The face, he says, of George W. Bush. And behind it, he says, the hard world view of the old, deep South. Americans who see George W. only in the cool context of the White House, says Lind, are missing the point. George W. Bush, he says, is remaking the nation in the mold of old, hard Texas.
