photoThe Israeli-Palestinian 'road map' to peace got a jump start over the weekend with Secretary of State Colin Powell's visit to Jerusalem and Jericho. The American Jewish community is watching the process carefully - and more than a few of its major representative bodies are putting in their two-cents worth. Most are expressing cautious optimism. Some are outright opposed to it. Others are urging the Bush administration to implement the plan, and soon.

The Israeli-Palestianian conflict has never been merely a neighborhood dispute, and the road to its solution will involve outside influcences as well. A close look at how one of those, the American Jewish community, will affect the path to peace.

Steven Cohen, National Scholar for the Israel Policy Forum

J.J. Goldberg, Editor of The Forward and author of "Jewish Power: Inside the Jewish Establishment
