Today, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasir Arafat appointed a long-time supporter and ally to the post of interim Palestinian Security Chief .The appointment comes over objections from the recently sworn-in Prime Minister, Ahmed Qurei. Qurei hinted on the weekend that he might resign;the latest action from Arafat is sure to exacerbate the tension. Also in Israel, reaction is mixed to an unoffical peace plan hammered out by Palestinian representatives and politicians from Israel's opposition parties. The New York Times' correspondent Greg Myre details the latest developments.
