photoRare sightings of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker were reported throughout the 20th century.

But these were largely dismissed by a scientific community that had deemed the bird extinct. A birder from the Cornell Lab of Ornathology and his wildlife photographer friend were some of the few that didn't lose hope and set out to prove the existence of the illusive, majestic bird.

Hear a discussion about the quest and ultimate rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in the Mississippi Delta.

Guests:

Tim Gallagher, editor in chief of "Living Bird," the flagship publication of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and author of "The Grail Bird: Hot on the trail of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker"

Bobby Ray Harrison, associate professor of art and photography at Oakwood College

This program aired on May 4, 2005.
