President Bush has a plan to fix social security. Democrats have been faulted for not responding with a plan of their own although alternative suggestions exist.

One of those alternative plans is getting a good deal of attention. MIT economist Peter Diamond's recipe for fixing Social Security doesn't include President Bush's progressive price indexing.

Hear a conversation with Peter Diamond about what he thinks should be done to fix Social Security and what he thinks is wrong with Bush's proposal.

Guests:

Peter Diamond, professor of economics at MIT, co-author of a public-pension overhaul plan.;

Maya MacGuiness, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget at the New America Foundation, a Washington think tank. She was social security advisor to the McCain for President campaign.

This program aired on May 9, 2005.
