Pussy Riot Protests In Sochi

As protests roil the Ukrainian capital of Kiev -- and other Ukrainian cities as well — smaller-scale protests have been springing up in the Russian Winter Olympic city of Sochi.

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, members of the Russian protest punk group Pussy Riot staged a protest performance in central Sochi, after which some members of the group were detained, beaten and whipped. No participants were arrested.

It was the group's first performance action in Russia in two years. Members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina were recently released from prison after serving a truncated two-year prison sentence in relation to a 2012 protest in Moscow's Virgin Mary Cathedral.

Protests in the Black Sea resort town have been closely monitored and regulated in and around the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Reports from the region show that few protesters have bothered to utilize a distant park designated as a protest area in a nearby town.
