Remembering Jonathan Schell, 1943 - 2014

Author, former New Yorker staff writer, Nation magazine editor and outspoken anti-nuclear thinker Jonathan Schell passed away this week at age 70. Best known for his towering works of war reporting, including "The Village of Ben Suc," "The Fate of the Earth" and "The Seventh Decade: The New Shape of Nuclear Danger," among others, Schell spent decades exploring and reporting on the costs and experiences of modern warfare.

Schell was also a frequent guest with On Point in the last 13 years, where he talked to us about the price and utility of war, memorializing soldiers and the ongoing struggle for global dominance in a fractured and independent world.

Listen back to our hours with Schell, and let us know which of his works you've read and consulted in your life.

The Unconquerable World (June 11, 2003)

The Utility of War (August 10, 2006)
