When waiting for the T's Mattapan trolley, it's every ear canal for itself.

The restored trolley, which dates back to the 1940s and connects Mattapan to Ashmont on the Red Line, has long been a headache for neighbors. Ever since the redesign of that turnaround loop at Ashmont, people living next to the tracks have had to contend with a screech that registers between 60 to 70 decibels. The MBTA is trying several patchwork methods to ease the noise, but for commuters, it's just part of daily life.

This program aired on July 20, 2010.
