Gov. Deval Patrick has nominated Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Associate Justice Roderick Ireland to be the first African-American chief justice of the state's highest court. If confirmed, Ireland will replace Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, who is retiring to spend time with her ailing husband.
