In 1998, Cher's "Believe" brought a strange, digitized device called Auto-Tune to the masses. Twelve years later, that sound out of some Blade Runner retro-future is everywhere from Kanye West to Bon Iver, making it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is manufactured. While Auto-Tune is nothing new, Boston Globe arts reporter Geoff Edgers says that blurry line between art and artifice went well beyond just music this year.
