A sewage treatment plant in Hooksett, N.H., flooded over the weekend, sending as many as 8 million biofilm disks designed to collect human fecal bacteria into the Merrimack River.

The potentially hazardous disks have floated down river into Massachusetts, where they are now littering riverbanks and beaches from Lowell to Newburyport.

Lowell Sun reporter Lyle Moran tells us the problem is ballooning by the day.

This segment aired on March 17, 2011.
