CommonHealth: Sports Drinks Debunked
ResumeThe London Olympics begin in just a few days, and that means it's time to tap that Olympic athlete in all of us. That's certainly what the sports drink industry wants you to believe. Work out hard, sweat and then replenish your body.
But there's a problem: those sports drinks probably aren't helping you, and they might even be harming you.
WBUR's Carey Goldberg reported on a new BMJ investigative report that questioned the usefulness of sports drinks and linked their explosion and popularity more to marketing rather than to evidence-based science.
Guests:
- Carey Goldberg, co-host of WBUR's CommonHealth blog
- Miriam Nelson, professor of nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and founder and director of the John Hancock Research Center on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Obesity Prevention, both at Tufts University. She also co-directs ChildObesity180, a multi-sector, childhood obesity prevention initiative.
