Medical Experts Rethink 'Morning After' Options
ResumeThe news that the emergency contraceptive pill, Plan B, is ineffective in women who weigh more than 176 pounds made headlines around the world last week. But a quick glance beneath the headlines and it's evident that even before this latest news, Plan B was not the silver bullet many hoped it would be.
Family planning advocates fought hard to make Plan B more accessible, and they were victorious. But their efforts have gone unrewarded: rates of unintended pregnancy have not changed since the drug was first approved by the FDA in 1999.
