Back in 2003, the legendary oral historian Studs Terkel said this: "Today we shall begin celebrating the lives of the uncelebrated!" He was standing in front of a small recording booth in the middle of Grand Central Terminal in New York, and it was the beginning of a project called StoryCorps.

The idea was simple: two ordinary people sit down in a sound-proof recording booth and interview each other. The result is a profound collection of 50,000 interviews gathered over the last ten years, and archived in the Library of Congress.

StoryCorps founder Dave Isay came in recently to talk about his new book, Ties That Bind: Stories of Love and Gratitude from the First Ten Years of StoryCorps.

Guest

Dave Isay, founder and president of StoryCorps.

This segment aired on December 24, 2013.
