Seventy-one-year old Sal DiMasi is in the fifth year of his eight year sentence for taking a kickback on a state contract. However, the bureau of prisons has requested his sentence be reduced under its compassionate release program, because DiMasi has cancer.

DiMasi's wife, Deborah, spoke this week about the possibility of compassionate release for her husband, saying, "This has been going on for so long, it's a very surreal thing to go through." She continued, "[It's] very hard to believe that it is something that could be possible, so that's hard to sink in."

Just this week, federal judge Mark Wolf demanded to know if DiMasi is benefiting from political connections he made while on Beacon Hill.

We discuss the implications of the case along with the news that Boston Children's Hospital can go forward with its expansion on top of Prouty Garden, and the latest on the four Massachusetts ballot questions.

Arline Isaacson, co-chair of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus.
