Summer usually means cookouts and beaches. So while everyone's prepping their grills for Tuesday's Fourth of July festivities, we wanted to go out to sea.

We look at the underbelly of the nation's oldest commissioned naval vessel and hear the heroic history of the nation's largest lightship, which helped vessels navigate the perilous Nantucket Shoals.

We also hear from the last surviving member of the Coast Guard's greatest small boat rescue and learn the fascinating history of barge outfitted to treat poor children and families.

Finally, we can't go out to sea without some songs to help us pass the time: a look at the rich history of sea shanties.

Guests

Lieutenant Commander Tim Anderson, executive officer of the USS Constitution.

Jacob Harned, gunner's mate seaman.

Margherita Desy, historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command.

Robert Mannino, president of the U.S. Lightship Museum, which owns the Nantucket Lightship in Boston.

Peter Brunk, former Coast Guard captain of the Nantucket Lightship.

Andy Fitzgerald, former Coast Guardsman, awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for his rescue with CG36500.
