Herald Media Inc. President And Publisher Pat Purcell On Herald Sale

On December 8th, Pat Purcell, the president and publisher of Herald Media Inc., announced that the Boston Herald's media company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will be sold to GateHouse Media. Since the announcement, 3 new bidders have also expressed interest in buying the paper.

In a letter to the Boston Herald staff, Purcell wrote, "All I ever wanted to do was keep the Boston Herald alive. And it is with this pending sale that I am able to do that in these difficult newspapering times. I am certain this is the best pathway forward for you and for the newspaper we have nurtured together, in my case, for the last 33 years."

Purcell became the publisher of the Boston Herald in 1984, and bought the paper from Rupert Murdoch in 1994.
