July 4th really celebrates an idea, the beginning of America's experiment with democracy.

You know Thomas Jefferson's immortal words.

"We hold these truth to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

But of course, in 1776, there were many in our nascent nation who did not enjoy equality, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. There were many who were not free.

So this hour, we revisit some of our best conversations that explore the stories of those who were not free, even as their nation declared its independence.

This program aired on July 4, 2018.
