The novel "The Garden Party" brings two families with seemingly nothing in common together the night before a wedding, at a dinner party in Brookline.

The families of the bridge and groom, Adam and Elizabeth, officially meet for the first time and the mood is anything but celebratory. The two clans are reluctant about the whole affair and approach one another with trepidation.

Over the course of one evening, the novel gives us the perspective of 19 family members — revealing their secrets, demons and desires.

Grace Dane Mazur will be reading on Aug. 12 at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery and Partners Story in Westport.
