Jim Doty was in the waters between Nantasket and Minot Light. He was being escorted by a boatman named Lefty when they happened upon a shark.

About the storyteller Jim Doty was a long-distance swimmer in Dedham. He famously braved Boston Harbor's dirty waters, dodging grease balls and sewage along his routes.
